????1.Thesubiectoftheparagraph(passage)is______.
????2.The paragraph(passage)deals with______.
????3.What topic iS treated in this paragraph(passage)?
4. The main idea of the paragraph(passage)is
5. From the paragraph(passage)we know that
6. The paragraph (passage)could be entitled
7. Which of the following is the best title for the paragraph(passage)?
8. What is the author's main pupose?

??????A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man--the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or in- dustry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the com- mon laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.
This attitude toward manual (體力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American lif~ One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪華

On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. ?????If there is no difference in general intelligence (智力) between boys and girls, what can explain girls' poor performance in science and mathematics?
?????It seems to be that their treatment at school is a directcause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them. Interestingly, both boys and girls often re- gard the subjects for boys as more difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not be- cause they are difficult, but for social reasons. ?Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive.
??????However, if we examine the
performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high- achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be world-wide. ?Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.
??????Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding (杰出的) mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.
??????Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. ?They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and toallow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. ?All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence(信心) that they are able to succeed.
Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.
1. Girls are likely to think that___________.
??A. science courses are for both boys and girls
??B. science courses make them more popular
??C. science courses make them successful
??D. science courses are difficult for them
2. The text mainly discusses ______ reasons for the difference between boys and girls in scientific achievements.
???A. biological ???B. historical
???C. social ???????D. personal
3. What are boys usually encouraged to do at school?
??A. To get help with their homework.
??B. To play the leading role in class.
??C. To work with girl students in class.
??D. To learn to take care of others.
4. What does the passage say about great mathematicians?
??A. Their teachers did not supply answers to them.
??B. They started learning mathematics at an earlier age.
??C. ?They showed mathematical abilities in their teenage ?years.
??D. Their success resulted from their strong interest in math ematics.
5. The author would probably agree that ______.
??A. boys and girls learn in the same way
??B. boys and girls are equal in general intelligence
??C. girls are more confident in themselves than before
??D. girls should take fewer science courses than boys
癇iological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.”
文章第五段在討論學(xué)校教育時(shí)說“They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to alloW them to take the lead in classroom discussion”,意思就是說在班里起帶頭作用。
????4.A ? 對(duì)大數(shù)學(xué)家的調(diào)查提到“Facts show that outstanding mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers"。
5.B ? 文章第一句話說“Ⅱthere is no diference in general intelligence between boys and grls...”,表明作者承認(rèn)男女之間智力并無大的差異,導(dǎo)致他們后天在理科方面的差距的直接原因不是智力,而是學(xué)校教育。

?????Mr. Gokyigit's gift, as Mr. Braun calls it, is an unusual ability to form an idea of the inside of a machine. "The computer permits me to reach out into the world and do almost anything I want to do," says Mr. Gokyigit.
The young programmer is at home with hardware as well, thanks partly to a highly developed sense of touch. ?Mitzi Nowakows-ki, an office manager at InteliData, remembers how he easily disconnected and reconnected their computer systems during a move last year. "Through feel, Suleyman can find the position of connectors, pins and wires much faster than most other people with sight,' he says. ????

??????Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson River must remember the Catskill Mountains. They are a branch of the great Appalachian family, and can be seen to the west rising up to a noble height and towering over the surrounding country. When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their beautiful shapes on the clear evening sky, but sometimes when it is cloudless, gray steam gathers around the top of the mountains which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will shine and light up like a crown of glory(華麗的皇冠).
?????At the foot of these mountains, a traveler may see light smoke going up from a village, In that village, and in one of the houses (which, to tell the exact truth, was sadly timeworn and weather-beaten), there lived many years ago, a simple, good-natured fellow by the name of Rip Van Winkle.
?????Rip's great weakness was a natural dislike of all kinds of money-making labor. It could not be from lack of diligence (勤勞) ,for he could sit all day on a wet rock and fish without say- lng a word, even though he was not encouraged by a single bite. He would carry a gun on his shoulder for hours, walking through woods and fields to shoot a few birds or squirrels. He would never refuse to help a neighbor, even in the roughest work. The women of the village, too, used to employ him to do such little jobs as their less helpful husbands would not do for them. In a word. Rip was ready to attend to everybody's business but his own.
If left to himself, he would have whistled (吹口哨) life away in perfect satisfaction~ but his wife was always mad at him for his idleness (懶散). Morning, noon, and night, her tongue was endlessly going, so that he was forced to escape to the outside of the house ???the only side which, in truth, belongs to a henpecked husband.
1. Which of the ?following ?best ?describes ?the Catskill Mountains?
????A. They are on the west of the Hudson River.
????B. They are very high and beautiful in this area.
????C. They can be seen from the Appalachian family.

???????Science and technology have advanced at
?such a rate that ?cloning (克隆)has now become a reality. The possibility of cioning humans is a serious issue and raises ethical (倫理的) questions. In my opinion, cloning is useful for research imo cures for disease. However, I think that it needs to be approached with caution and carefully monitored by governments.
??????Research into cloning and stem cell (肝細(xì)胞) production is primarily aimed at finding new treatments for currently incura- ble illnesses. While this would improve the quality of life for many, not enough is understood about what effects cloning would have on the world in the future. This is primarily because we do not understand enough about the effects of cloning and both the physical and psychological effects that is likely to have on cloned humans and on the rest of the world. Further- more, it is thought that a cloned human would be unlikely to survive birth and would suffer from complications resulting from malformed (畸形的) organs.
?????There are also quite serious ethical issues in danger. In essence, those who are against cloning would argue that scientists have no right to play God and to interfere with natural processes. Producing embryos (~)for the purpose of harvesting stem cells for research presents important questions about the nature and status of the embryo being produced. It may also make us question whether throwing it away after use reduces the value we place on human life.
A conclusion I do not agree that research into cloning using human embryos should continue. This is not only because it may r
educe the value we place on human life, but also because not enough is known about the effects. However, I do think that if there is a way to produce stem cells using cloning which does not put human life at risk, then governments should continue to support it.
1. What is the writer's general opinion on cloning ?
??A. It is useful in every area of research.
??B. It needs to be carefully controlled by governments.
??C. It is useful for research into cures for disease if it is controlled.
??D. It is only useful for research into cures for disease.

?????Transportation and communication networks bring people together. Yet sometimes people themselves create barriers (障礙) to transportation and communication. In some countries, laws stop people from moving freely from place to place. Over the centuries, many groups of people have been denied the freedom to travel because of their race, religion, or nationality. In the Middle Ages, for example, Jews were often forbidden to move about freely within certain cities. South Africa's government used to require black Africans to carry passes when they travel within the country. Some governments require all citizens to carry identification papers and to report to government officials whenever they move.
?????Countries set up customs posts at their borders. Foreign travellers must go through a customs inspection before they are allowed to travel in the country. Usually travellers have to carry special papers such as passports and visas (簽證). ?Some countries even limit the number of visitors to their country each year. Others allow tourists to visit only certain areas of the country, or they may require that travellers be with an official guide at all times during their stay.
??????Many of those harriers to travel also act as barriers to communication. When two governments disagree with each other on important matters, they usually do not want their citizens to exchange news or ideas freely. Countries often try to keep military or industrial information secret.
Today, people have the ability to travel, to communicate, and to transport goods more quickly and easily than ever be- fore. A few months ago, millions of people in London heard alarms all over the town. The Emergency Services, the Fire Departments, the Police, hospitals, and ambulances stood by, ready to go into action. In railway underground stations, people read notices and maps that told them where to go and what to do in the emergency. This was Exercise Flood Call, to prepare people for a flood emergency. London wasn't flooded. In 1928, people living in Westminster, the heart of London, drowned in floods. ???????Naturally, the name change didn't cause Debbie/I.ynne's professional achievement but it surely helped if only by adding a bit of self-confidence (自信) to her talents. Social scientists say
?that what you're called can affect your life. Throughout history, names have not only identified people But also described them. "... As his name is, so is he..." says the Bible. For better or worse, qualities such as friendliness or reserves, simpleness or charm may be suggested by your name and encourageother people before they even meet you.
Of course, names with a good sense can work for you even encouraging new acquaintances. A recent survey showed that American men thought Susan to be the most attractive female name, while women believed Richard and David were the most attractive to men. ?One woman I know turned down a blind date with a man named Harry because "he sounded dull". Several evenings later she came up to me at a party, pressing for an introduction to a very nice man with whom they looked at each other all evening. "Oh, 'I said. "You mean Harry? "She was ill at ease.

Passage 5
?????Yang Yongfang used to take the bus to work. But, these days, when she takes a look at the bus, all she sees is "a big box full of people, all breathing in there. It seems very unsafe." ?????
????And that means SARS. So Yang got out her bicycle and dusted it off. Other Chinese who, until recently, appeared to be moving away from the old mode of transportation, seem to he back riding as well.
??????Of course, there's no shortage of bikes. There were plenty long before SARS showed up. But in recent years, private care have been growing in large numbers, crowding bicycles off the streets in some of the biggest cities. Now SARS has brought the bicycle traffic back. Crowded trains and buses look less attractive(吸引人的).
??????In Shanghai 120,000 more bicycles were registered (登記) in April, well above last year's monthly average of 50,000.[來源:學(xué)§科§網(wǎng)Z§X§X§K]
??????People's Daily recently reported that "bicycle" had suddenly become the third most frequently searched term on the nation's largest Web search engine.
However, if bike sales continue upward, it could become a nightmare (噩夢(mèng))for traffic planners, who had to contend with the often deadly clash between bikes and motorized vehicles.
