When a Japanese friend of mine first visited Britain and first saw a British map of the
world, he was very surprised by what he found. At first, the picture seemed familiar, in
the middle of the map, there were two or three small but long red islands lying between an
ocean and a continent. But something was wrong land mass and ocean had changed places.
It wasn't Japan he was looking at, it was the British Isles (英倫列島). Japan was out on
the edge (邊緣) somewhere.
?
Until that moment all the maps he had known had set Japan in the middle of the
picture and had colored it red# yet when he got to Britain, he found that the country in the
middle of the map was Britain and it was also painted red. What my friend had found was
that his country was no longer in its familiar place and he no longer knew where he was.
?
Our sense of ourselves and our place in the world may not, as my friend's experience
suggests. come from anything real or actual, for no country is in the middle of the earth,
except as a picture in the mind. a map is only a model in which we may set ourselves. it
just helps us to feel that we know where we are.

Half-Truths
Be care of those who use the truth to deceive ( 欺騙). When someone tells you
something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he
can create a false impression
For example, someone might say, I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票).
It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred
dollars!"
This Buy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two
hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he purposely (故意) omitted important
information. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are
just as dishonest.
Dishonest candidates (候選人) in political campaigns often use this strategy. Let's say
that during Governor Smith's last term (任期), her state lost one million jobs and gained
three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying,
"During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!"?hat's true. However
an honest statement would have been, "During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net
gain of two million jobs."
?
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false claims
so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might show off, "Nine out of ten doctors
recommend Yucky pills to cure nose problems."It fails to mention that they only asked ten
doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.
His kind of dishonesty happens too often. It's a sad fact. of life, Lies are lies, and
sometimes the truth can lie as well.
?
( ??) 41. Which statement is TRUE according to the article?
A. Whenever telling the truth, people are really lying.
B. One can get rich in a flash by Betting lottery tickets.
C. All governors help their states.
D. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.
( ??) 42. The underlined word"omitted"in the fourth paragraph probably means
A. spent money ????????B.. left out
C. told about ??????????D. exposed
( ??) 43. The author clearly wants people to_______________.
A. think carefully about what they read and hear
B. learn to tell half-truths
C. trust no one but the best friends
D. vote for female candidates
( ??) 44. Another suitable title for this selection would be______________.
A. Telling the Truth ???????????B. Everyone Lies
C. Lying With the Truth ????????D. Trust Nobody

Wearing shabby clothes and reaching out a dirty hand towards people, this is the
traditional image of beggars. But nowadays that image has changed in many ways. Beggars
can even look exactly like a white-collar worker.

With the development of the Internet, beggars also benefit from new technology.
Without standing on the street all day tong, they can just sit at home and click the
keyboard-° beggar websites"make the begging business much easier.
?
Just by googling the words beggar and website, dozens of such Chinese forums are
found."Please donate 1 yuan; it will help me be rich! —that's a common slogan from
many of these begging websites,

The layout of these sites is quite similar. There are some funny or sad pictures across
the top. of the screen, then a request for donations is classified into three levels 1 yuan, 5
yuan and 10 yuan. Just by clicking on these buttons, one can make a kindly donation.
People can pay through an online paying system or send money to a bankcard number.
These websites also provide lists of those who have donated, but almost all of them
have mostly donated 1 yuan per person, and online stores or other small websites can have
a place on the site for a small advertisement after the donation.
?
?
Actually, such begging websites are not original in China. Online begging first
appeared in the United States. Some individuals opened such websites to relieve their
economic embarrassment.
In 2002, a woman in New York owed about $ 20, 000 to the bank, so she set up a
begging website and, what a surprise, she received over $ 13, 000 from netizens which
solved her problems more or less.

Section B
Directions?Read the follow passage and complete the statements that follow. Write one
word or more in each space.
Long after the 1998 World Cup was won, disappointed fans were still angry at the
questionable referring (提交的) decisions that made their team lose the match. A research
was sent to study the performance of some top referees (裁判員).
The researcher organized experimental matches between four youth teams. Each
match lasted an hour, divided into three periods of 20 minutes during which different
referees were in charge.
?
Observers noted down the referees’ errors, of which there were 61 over the matches.
Compared to an ordinary match of 90 minutes, each referee made almost 23 mistakes, a
remarkably high number.
The researcher then studied the video tapes to study the matches in detail.
Surprisingly, he found that errors were more likely when the referees were close to the
incident. When the officials go it right, they were on average 17 meters away from the
action. The average distance in the case of errors was 12 meters. The research shows the
proper distance is about 20 meters.
There also seemed to be a proper speed. Correct decisions came when the referees were
moving at a speed of about 2 meters per second. The average speed for errors was 4 · meters
per second.
If FIFA, football's international ruling body, wants to improve the justice of refereeing at the next World Cup, it should encourage referees to keep their eyes on the action from a distance, rather than rushing to keep up with the ball, the researcher argues.
He also says that FIFA's insistence that referees should retire at age 45 may be misguided.
If keeping up with the action is not so important, their physical condition is less of importance.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN
