Section B(10%)
Directions:Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.
?????Thought he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamed that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practical sewing machine.
??????Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.
??????To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious, but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves ”.

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman.
I once read a saying, “If somebody wants something of you, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don’t, you may be treated as coldly as winter.”
You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn’t been a salesman. You needn’t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn’t listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn’t always keep patience and smile; you needn’t repeat the same sentences over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike.
I did this work for a month ,then I decided to give it up. Apart from the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus?sacrificing?my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower.
Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money it came at great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong negative (負面的)effects on study.
Most students don’t view the relationship between studies and work correctly. In my opinion, it isn’t must for financial reasons, students should be careful about taking up a part-time job.
1. From the text, we can tell that the writer is_________.
A.an unemployed man
B. a middle school student
C. a college student
D. a door-to-door salesman
2.Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “sacrificing”?
A.giving up
B.wasting
C.using
D.getting

【答案】1.C 2.A
I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus?sacrificing?my study time可以推測出作業(yè)是一名學生,第三段第一句話I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities.
I found I was paying too much attention to the job....... The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower.,可以推測出作者因為花費在工作上的時間太多了導致最近測試的結(jié)果顯示作者的成績在下降。 故選A

Are zoos bad for animals?
Zoos have existed since ancient times and were features of the great courts of Egypt and China. The display of unusual animals from foreign countries was, for a long time, a show of wealth and power. Today, zoos focus on the preservation of animal species and education of the public._____1_____
Some animals are distinctly unsuited for life in the zoo, however noble the aims of the organization. Keeping elephants in captivity (囚禁) has long caused argument among animal rights activists. Elephants in the world wander constantly, covering a wide territory on a daily basis. In captivity, they have no choice but to stand still for long periods of time._____2_____ Yet elephants are a threatened species in their native environments and are heavily caught for ivory(象牙),leather and meat illegally. To protect the species from extinction, some experts feel that captive breeding programs may be the best strategy for future survival. Many elephants in captivity were rescued from circuses(馬戲團), saved from natural disasters or removed from the wild due to injury or abandonment.
_____3_____ the chances are, if a zoo has nothing but cement floors and metal enclosures, the animals will not do as well. Many famous zoos now construct enclosures allowing animals freedom of movement and native vegetation. Some zoos have even begun housing species of animals together that normally interact I the wild, such as certain types of monkeys.
Zoos are not a perfect solution for preservation._____4_____ They are undeniably helpful in repopulating declining animal species and encouraging a preservationist outlook, but they are unquestionably primary species in their treatment of some animals. Hopefully, animal activists and zoo advocates will continue to work together, finding ways to create the best environment for captive animals in breeding and repopulation efforts.

【答案】1.A 2.E 3.D 4.C

IV. Summary Writing (10%)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Write a summary of the passage in 60 words.
The voice in the box
When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well the polished old case fastened to the wall?on the lower stair landing. But my first personal experience with this genie-in-the-receiver?came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. I accidentally hit my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible, but there didn’t seem to be any reason in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my hurting finger, finally arriving at the stairway—the telephone! Climbing up I unhooked the receiver and held it to my ear. “Information Please,” I said.
????A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear, “Information.”
????“I hurt my finger…” I cried?into the phone. The tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.
“Isn’t your mother home?” came the question.
“Nobody’s home but me.” I sobbed.
?“Are you bleeding?” “No,” I replied. “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.”
“Can you open your icebox?” she asked. I said I could. “Then chip off a little piece of ice and hold it on?your finger.?That will stop the hurt. Be careful when you use the icepick,”?she said “And don’t cry. You’ll be right.”
After that I called Information Please for everything. I asked her for help can geography, and she told me where Philaddelpia was, and the Orinoco, the romantic river that I was going to explore when I grew up. She helped me with my arithmetic, and she told me that my pet chipmunk—I had caught him in the park just the day before---would eat fruit and nuts.
The passage tells us the story about the author and receiver by phone. Because the author hurt his finger with a hammer and no one could help him, he turned to the telephone for help. And she told the author how to deal with the wound and comforted him. From then on, they become friends. They discussed the geography and the pet.
