Keele University is situated in 600 acres of landscaped grounds to the west of the Potteries in?North Staffordshire. These well-wooded grounds with their lakes, streams and formal flower beds?support a wealth of wildlife. The surrounding countryside of the Staffordshire/Shropshire/Cheshire borders is also a rich area for the naturalist and wanderer, while the splendid grit-stone moorland of North Staffordshire and the limestone valleys of Derbyshire and northeast Staffordshire are not far away. Of the 600 acres some 300 are let out as Home Farm. Of the rest, about half is woodland while the other half comprises the campus buildings and sports fields. The landscape we see today owes much to the work of Ralph Sneyd (1793-1870)?who began planting on a grand scale in 1830, after inheriting the estate from his father.
Throughout the period of its construction, the university has been careful to preserve as many mature trees as possible and to restrict the height of buildings to maintain the feeling of living and working in a landscape. The university has a continuing program of landscaping, and many lovely trees have been planted. Keele campus is, then, one of the most charming and peaceful in the country, yet is only a short distance from the Potteries and the M6 motorway.
Although the landscape is an artificial one, it nonetheless has rich flora?and fauna with more than 110 species of birds, 120 species of flowering?plants, more than 60 species of trees, 24 species of butterflies, 380 species of moths, 100 species of beetles and 100 species of flies having been recorded so far. Although there is little?of great rarity here, a wide variety of common species and a good network of paths from which to see them make Keele an ideal place to visit for the casual observer, as well as for both the novice?and the more experienced naturalist.
69. What is the passage mainly about?
????A. The school surroundings.
????B. The history of the school.
????C. The school curriculum.
D. The location of the school.
70. How much area of the ground is used for the campus buildings and?sports fields?
A. 600 acres. ????????B. 300 acres. ????????C. 150 acres. ????????D. 450 acres.
71. Why is Keele University an ideal place for naturalists?
????A. Because there are many plants and wildlife species not found anywhere else.
????B. Because it has a natural landscape and a wide variety of rare wildlife.
????C. Because it is so peaceful and far away from disturbance of human activities.
D. Because the well-wooded grounds support a wealth of wildlife.
?72. The word novice in the last paragraph probably refers to___________.?????????
A. college student ???B. beginner ??????????C. expert ????????????D. amateur ??

There is an alarming possibility that our American economy is moving in the direction of what some people call a polarized (兩極分化的) society—a large population of people with middle- class or higher incomes and values, with a considerable increase at the top, and a large number of people who have been economically and culturally separated from the main society.
??A great many economists, myself?included, feel uneasy about the fact that 70 percent of the economy does what is called service work and only 30 percent does what is called goods-related work. New technology keeps entering the economy and bringing employment into disorder. When you look back at how American economy developed, you see a migration?off the farm into the factory and out of factory into the office. The main push has come from technology. There has been relatively little new machinery to push people out of office, but that’s changing now. If the computer creates jobs in the office, the service section will increase and there will be no squeezing of employment. But if technology presses service people out of work, I don’t know where they are going to go.
Personally, I think American optimism (樂觀主義) is in for a very severe challenge. We have always considered ourselves to have a right to be number one in the world. But of course we don’t have any such right or assurance. And we have to be patiently prepared for the troubling fact that we are number two, or three in many ways. In terms?of health, for instance, we have fallen seriously behind, and that’s a big blow to our self-image.
In the next 20 years the government will have to take active steps in providing work and income for the bottom one third of the population. The government unwillingly provides some sort?of income, but it doesn’t provide work. And work is essential for people’s self-respect and also for the building of many kinds of basic structures that are needed in the country.
73. The author finds that?___________.
?????A. the American society is being driven into a?dead end of its economical development
?????B. the American people are being forced to concentrate in two sharply contrasting economic?positions
?????C. the majority of Americans have considerably increased their incomes they need
?????D. the requirement for income rather than for work is of first importance to American people
?74. The author thinks that Americans are?___________.
?????A. threatened with the danger of losing their economic superiority
?????B. entitled to take the leading place in the world economy
?????C. enjoying high employment owing to the push of new technology
?????D. prepared for a big blow to their self-image
75. According to the passage, what the author worries about is that?___________.
?????A. Americans have lost the possibility of choosing their jobs
?????B. the government is unwilling to provide some sort of income for the bottom one third of the population
?????C. work is no longer essential for American people’s self-respect
?????D. the service people would have trouble finding jobs once they become unemployed
?76. In the author’s opinion, American economy___________.
?????A. has been brought to a possible depression
?????B. has developed by turning farmers into office workers
?????C. should adjust the improper?division of work and wealth
?D. may count on new technology to create more jobs for the unemployed

The Na people in southwestern China are the only known society that completely avoids marriage,?says Stephanie Coontz in her new book, Marriage, a History. Instead, brothers help sisters raise the?children they have through casual sex with non-family members. Will we all be like the Na in the?future? With divorce and illegitimacy(非婚生) rates still high, the institution of marriage seems out?of date in much of the world. Coontz, a family historian at Evergreen State College in Washington,?doesn't announce the extinction of marriage, but she does argue that?dramatic changes in family life?over the past 30 years represent an unprecedented social revolution, and there's no turning back. The?only hope is accepting these changes and figuring out how to work with them.
To understand how we got here, Coontz traces the evolution of marriage from the Stone Age.?Throughout human history, people married to arrange child raising, pass on property and organize?life. Until?relatively recently, most of these alliances (聯(lián)姻) were not legally approved but rather?informal arrangements accepted by society at large. The choice of partner was rarely left to the?couple: parents and other respected?community elders made the match. “Marriage was a way?of turning?strangers into relatives, of making peace, of?making permanent trading?connections,”?Coontz says. “There?are many different languages that call wives the Anglo-Saxon equivalent of?the word?‘peace-weaver’.”
In the Western world, that model held until about 200 years ago, Coontz says, when the idea?of marrying for love emerged. Those who complain about the current state of marriage should?blame the Enlightenment (啟蒙運動) emphasis on self-fulfillment and the pursuit of happiness.?It took a while for the love revolution to have its full impact. Some other barriers had to be?knocked down first: inequality between men's and women's roles, little social mobility, unreliable birth control and harsh punishment for illegitimacy.?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
By the 1970s, these obstacles were gone and marriage became a potentially much more?satisfying personal relationship and the subject of intense debate. “In the United States, it has?become a lightning rod, ”Coontz says, “for our anxieties about our speeded-up, materialist, ?winner-take-all society. People think if only marriage were more committed, that would take care of all the other problems.”?But Coontz argues that it's pointless to try and roll back time. For better or worse, we're stuck with marrying for love and accepting the consequences of living?happily ever after—until someone better comes along.
??77. From the passage we can learn that___________.
????A. marriage for love has brought about a social revolution
????B. social progress has removed the obstacles to marriage for love
????C. marriage is likely to return to?its?original state ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????D. satisfying personal relationship contributes to steady family?life?
??78.According to?Coontz, in ancient times marriage could mean anything except___________
A. freedom of war or violence ???????????????
B. transfer of property
C. choosing an inheritor ????????????????????
D. accepting an outsider
?
?
79.Why do Americans refer to marriage as a lightning rod??
A. Marriage ensures the security of the society.
????B. Marriage becomes the focus of intense debate.
????C. Marriage functions as the key issue in solving all the social problems.
????D. Marriage protects family life from lightning.
80. Which of the following clearly indicates Coontz’s?attitude towards marriage?
????A. In Coontz's book the family model in the Na people is highly appreciated.
????B. Coontz blames the current state of marriage on social mobility.
????C. Coontz predicts that marriage will naturally run its course.
????D. Coontz argues that people should be realistic about the current state of marriage.
Section C
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-AB?for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A. Keep up with the progress of the course
B. Be able to communicate through writing
C. Take the program seriously
D. Accept critical thinking as part of online learning
E. Be open-minded about sharing experiences
AB. Be willing to “speak up”?if problems arise
|
Online students require unique qualities to be successful. The following list discusses some ideal qualities of successful online students.
81.
?
Many different people find that the online method required them to use their experiences and that online learning offers them a place to communicate with each other. This forum for communication?removes the visual barriers?that hinder some students from expressing?themselves. In addition, students are given time to reflect on the information before?replying. In this way, students can help to keep the online environment open and friendly.
82.
?
In the virtual classroom nearly all communication is written, so it is critical that students feel comfortable expressing themselves in writing. Some students have limited writing abilities which need to be improved before or as part of the online experience. This usually requires extra commitment by these students.?
83.
?
Remember that instructors cannot see their students in an online course. This means students must be absolutely explicit with their comments and requests. If they experience technical?difficulties, or problems in understanding something about the course, they must let the instructors or other online students know; otherwise there is no way anyone can know something is wrong.
84.
?
Online learning is not easier?than study in regular classrooms. In fact, many students say it requires much more time and effort. Requirements?for online courses are not less than those of any quality program. Successful students, however, see online learning as a convenient way to receive their education—not an easier way. Many online students?sit at computers for hours at a time during evenings and on weekends in order to complete their assignments.
85.
?
Online learning is normally arranged in the time sequence?and requires devotion on the students’?part. Strictly?following each step and completing all work on time is vital. Once students get behind, it is almost?impossible to catch up. Students need to want to be there and need to want the experience. The instructor?may have to communicate with students personally to offer help and remind them of the need to keep up.
