Gary and Gavin were twin brothers who worked in a department store owned by their father. After the father had passed away, they took over the store. Everything went well until the day a twenty-dollar bill disappeared. Gary had left the bill on the cash register(收銀機). But when he returned, the money was gone.
Gary then asked his brother Gavin, “Did you see that twenty-dollar bill on the cash register?” Gavin said that he had not. But Gary did not let it go and kept questioning. “Twenty-dollar bills can’t get up and walk away by themselves! Surely you must have seen it.” Gary was unhappy. Tempers began to rise and resentment(怨恨)grew. “I said I didn’t see it!” Gavin replied with anger.
The quarrel(吵架)divided the young men and they could no longer work together. Later, a wall was built in the center of the store. For twenty years, hostility(敵意)never ended.
One day, a strange man came to the store. He walked in and asked Gary, “How long have you been here?” Gary replied that he’d been there all his life. “Then you are the person I’m looking for, since I must confess(坦白)something to you,” the stranger said. “Twenty years ago, I was totally broke(破產(chǎn)了)and hungry. I entered this store from the back door and saw a twenty-dollar bill on the cash register. And I took it. All these years I haven’t been able to forget that. I had to come back and ask for your forgiveness.”
The stranger felt surprised when seeing tears well up in the eyes of the middle-aged man in front of him. “Would you please go next door and tell the same story to the man in the store?” Gary asked. Then something surprised the stranger even more—after hearing his story, the two middle-aged men hugged each other and cried together in front of the wall of the store.
After twenty years, the wall of resentment that set them apart finally came down.

The Spirit of Christmas
????Many would agree that when we think of Christmas, we probably think of gifts, Christmas trees and Santa Claus. But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of sharing and giving love and joy to people around us. The story in A Christmas Carol is perhaps the best example of this.
????A Christmas Carol is a famous novel written by Charles Dickens. It is about an old man named Scrooge who never laughs or smiles. He is mean(低劣的). He only thinks about himself and never treats others nicely. He just cares about whether he can make more money and he hates Christmas. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge sees the ghost of Jacob Marley, his dead business partner. Marley used to be just like Scrooge, so he is punished(懲罰)after he dies. He warns Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him. He also tells Scrooge to expect three spirits to visit him.
????That night, three ghosts visit Scrooge. First, the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and reminds Scrooge of his happier days as a child. Then the second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, takes him to see how others are spending Christmas this year. Everyone is happy, even poor people. The last one, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, takes him to the future. Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares. He is so frightened that he wakes up in his bed and finds out it is only the next morning — Christmas Day!
????He decides to change his life and promises to be a better person. He happily celebrates Christmas with his relatives. He also gives gifts to people in need. He now treats everyone with kindness and warmth, spreading love and joy everywhere he goes. And that is the true spirit of Christmas!
