Running isn’t about speed, but not slowing down.
When my husband walked into the bedroom, I was still half asleep. I had just run a 15km race yesterday and thought I could have a???66 ??morning.
He excitedly told me the news of the day: an American teenage runner, who has won state titles and is heading to nationals in New York. She suffers from sclerosis (硬化癥). I jumped out of bed and found the story myself,???67 ??it again, and was surprised at her courage.
The American teenage runner bravely faces her physical challenges. Isn’t this what we all need? Remove all our fear, do the hard work, and just see what happens? I used to be a single mom. And I ran in races where I competed with???68 ?.
But now I run because it sets me free and makes me realize that if I dream enough and work hard, everything is???69 ?. Running is about perseverance (毅力) and sticking to the faith that no matter how terrible the process is, you will make it to the end. A famous running coach once said, “Endurance (耐力) sport is not about who goes???70 ?. It’s all about who doesn’t slow down.”
So to train all his runners, he first asks them to slow down and run at a comfortable pace (heart rate around 80 percent max). This way can improve heart and lung efficiency (肺功能) and so on. So you could keep a very steady pace (穩(wěn)定的步調) in a marathon. It is a very wonderful method, and it proves???71 ?.
But I still struggle to adhere (堅持) to the principle (原則).
Even after so many races, I???72 ??make the mistake of starting off too fast and see my energy vanish in the third quarter of the distance. It is unpleasant to see other runners pass me at an easy pace, while I fall behind and end up not making it to the top three or achieve the time I had set for myself. Starting steadily and keeping a stable pace is the way of getting ahead in a long race.

The Green Belt Movement is a community (社區(qū)) group in Kenya. It aims to help protect the environment, mainly through planting trees.
The Green Belt Movement was started in 1977 by Wangari Maathai. When Wangari started the Green Belt Movement, she thought much about both people and the environment. She thought that if people grew the trees themselves, it would help them to understand the environment and develop their local cultures.
Today, the Green Belt Movement works like this. Members from the Movement go to communities to talk about tree planting and starting nurseries (苗圃). If the local people are interested, they can join the Movement as a group. When they join, they receive a lot of information about how to prepare the soil (土壤), and collect and grow seeds. When the people know what to do, they can collect seeds, plant them into seedlings (幼苗). When the seedlings are big enough, they will be planted on farms. The Green Belt Movement pays the nursery money for each seedling that is still alive after three months.
The Green Belt Movement now has over 6,000 community nurseries in Kenya, and many more in other African countries. Over the last 30 years, it has planted more than 30 million trees in parks and on farms.
The Green Belt Movement also runs programs to help people start gardens and grow plants that are local to their area. This means that many communities can now take care of almost all their own food needs, and they can often make extra income (額外的收入) as well.
In 2004, Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize. Giving the prize to Wangari showed that peace doesn’t just mean stopping wars. It can also mean making the world a better place to live in.
