Considering the natural beauty that Alaska’s capital has to offer, it is no wonder tourism is one of the city’s biggest industries. Juneau is located in southeastern Alaska and its population is approximately 27,000 people. Juneau is surrounded by Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts,as well as by beautiful snow-capped glaciers and sparkling waterways which reflect images of the picturesque?city.
Juneau was founded in 1880 by two gold prospectors, Joseph Juneau and Richard Harris. After they struck gold, word spread and the population expanded rapidly. Miners came from near and far to harvest?the riches. Others came to work in the fur trading centers and the fisheries. Eventually the miners decided to name the new town Juneau and the district, Harrisburg.
Juneau continued to grow and?prosper.?In 1900,Juneau became the capital of Alaska. The government offices were not actually moved until 1906. Juneau replaced Sitka, which was the capital at the time. When Alaska became a state in the Union in 1959, Juneau became the state capital.
In 1976 Alaskans voted to name Willow, a town north of Anchorage, as Alaska’s new capital. They felt Juneau was a city on the decline. After the economy picked up, in 1982. Alaskans voted to retain?Juneau as state capital.
Due to the limited amount of level land in Juneau, roads throughout the city are narrow and long, with steeply angled cross streets. Juneau is the only state capital in the country only accessible by water or air. The proximity?of glaciers would make road building costly and damaging to the environment.
The fact that cruise ships, ferry boats and airplanes are the only means of transportation to the city has not affected the number of people who visit. The largest tourism season is the summer. Sometimes as many as five cruise ships arrive in one day, dropping off between 400 to 1,000 tourists interested in visiting local shops and attractions.
When people want a break from life in downtown Juneau, they can visit some of the fascinating sites surrounding the city. One of the biggest attractions is the Tongass National Forest, a 16.8 million acre forest consisting of spruce, hemlock, cedar and other tree types. Tongass, the largest National Forest in the United States, covers about 75 percent of all the land in southeastern Alaska. Tongass is managed as a working forest, which means logging, mining and recreational activities, such as camping and hiking, are allowed.
The woodlands are just one of the area’s memorable sites. East of Juneau lies the spectacular Juneau Icefield. The icefield stretches for nearly 1,200 square miles. The icefield is the source of more than 30 valley glaciers. Glaciers are?extended?masses of ice formed by years?of accumulated falling snow. Valley glaciers descend from high mountains and they move very slowly. Presently, these glaciers are all gradually retreating back to the mountains.
Today Juneau continues to grow and prosper. The city serves as the center of trade for the northern half of the state. The surrounding snow-covered glaciers, snow-capped mountains, sparkling waters and towering forests add charm to this unique city.

What's a good holiday like? Good rests and relaxation are necessary. We can go?to visit cartoon shows or do much more reading which is not possible to do when we?are at school. Maybe it is a good idea to pay a visit to see those lovely wild animals.
However, holiday does not mean you won't take care of your homework. You?have to make a good plan to make sure you finish the homework first. It is a very?good opportunity for us to review what we have learned at school. It is also?a right?time to adjust our mood and attitude.
I think this is a nice holiday.

There’s no place like home
Some people dream of having a home ‘just like the ones in decorating magazines’. That sort of beautifully stylish home may be n??81 ?, but for a truly special place to live, why not choose a home unlike any other in the neighbourhood? The unique(獨一無二的) houses on these pages challenge people to reconsider what a home is s??82 ??to look like.
Environmentally friendly homes are getting a lot of a??83 ??these days. Earthships, for example, are unusual homes made from materials like mud, straw and reused wood. The designers of earthships combine these natural materials with recycled i??84 ?, such as bottles, cans and old tyres. These homes show their belief that, when it comes to saving the environment, ‘if you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.’
Additionally many of these homes use wind or solar power. They are designed to collect and recycle water, and the people who live in them often add a greenhouse in which to grow food. As a result, if you live in an earthship, your monthly living costs will d??85 ??to almost zero. For people who want to try one out, the Phoenix Earthship in the US is available as holiday accommodation(住宿).
Shipping containers are now being reused to make a??86 ??type of environmentally friendly home. A number of architects have started changing individual containers into holiday homes. Alternatively they can be combined to make office blocks and blocks of flats, such as those Container City in London, England.
With all of the examples of imaginative homes, it is clear that people no longer need to settle for ordinary living spaces. One thing is sure: people living in homes that look as s??87 ??as these never have to give anyone their address. They can just say, ‘Look for the weird house. You will know it when you see it.’

Something changed a few years ago. Around 2012, teens started to spend their time much differently from the generations before. I started to notice big differences in teens’ b___81___ and attitudes in the yearly survey of 11 million young people.
???A 2017 survey found that two out of three U.S. teens owned an iphone. For this reason, Icall them iGen(iphone generation).
???What makes iGen different?
???Growing up with a smart phone has affected nearly every aspect of their lives. They spend so much time on the internet, texting friends and on social media, an average of about six hours per day, so they have less free time for everything else. That i___82___ going to parties, shopping at the mall or watching movies with their friends. These were o___83___ the favorite activities of most teens. But now iGen teens are taking part in these social activities at a lower rate than others.
???A link that should be noticed
???I wondered if these changes might be c___84___ to their deteriorating(退化)mental health. Sure enough, I found that teens who spend more time on screens are less happy and more disappointed. Meanwhile, a 2017 study asked some adults to give up Facebook for a week and others to continue using it. Those who gave up Facebook felt happier, less l___85__ and less disappointed during the week as they had more free time for social activities like meeting friends, watching movies, etc.
???What else is lost?
???Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social abilities. A 2016 study showed that the sixth graders who spent just five days at a camp w___86___ using screens ended time better at reading expression on others’ faces.
???That isn’t to say that iGen teens don’t have a___87___. They are physically safer and more tolerant(寬容). They also seem to have a stronger work spirit and more realistic expectations. To my surprise, the iGen teens I interviewed said they preferred seeing their friends in person to communicating with them using their phones.
??But it might be just what iGen needs.
